2044 Comprehensive Plan Outreach Results

The City of Gig Harbor is conducting outreach throughout the 2044 Comprehensive Plan update process. This page will be regularly updated with feedback collected during outreach events to allow for better transparency throughout this process.

Farmer's Market August 24, 2023

The city utilized the poker chip activity at the August 24th Farmer's Market. Participants were each given 6 poker chips to distribute amongst a set of City planning issues. 


There were 67 participants who prioritized their 6 chips according to the graph to the right. Traffic and transportation and housing stood out. The city received comments that sidewalks and roundabouts are great the city needs more citywide.

National Night Out August 1, 2023

The City utilized the poker chip activity at the August 1st National Night Out community event. Participants were each given 6 poker chips to distribute amongst a set of City planning issues. 


There were 13 participants who prioritized their 6 chips according to the graph to the right. Traffic and transportation stood out as important with sports and recreation a close second. The City received comments that safety and accessibility of trails is an issue in some areas.

Farmer's Market July 13, 2023

The City utilized the poker chip activity at the July 13th Farmer's Market. Participants were each given 6 poker chips to distribute amongst a set of City planning issues. 


There were 29 participants who prioritized their 6 chips according to the graph to the right. Housing costs and traffic and transportation stood out as important with downtown vitality and bikes and trails as a close third.

Farmer's Market June 29, 2023

The City utilized the poker chip activity at the June 21st Fest 4 All. Participants were each given 6 poker chips to distribute amongst a set of City planning issues. 


There were 46 participants who prioritized their 6 chips according to the graph to the right. Housing cost was of the most importance with sports and recreation and downtown vitality 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

The City utilized the poker chip activity at the June 21st Fest 4 All. Participants were each given 6 poker chips to distribute amongst a set of City planning issues. 


There were 21 participants who prioritized their 6 chips according to the graph to the right. Traffic and transportation was of the most importance with housing costs and sports and recreation coming in 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

Farmer's Market June 15, 2023

The City debut a new outreach technique at the June 15th Farmer's Market. Participants were each given 6 poker chips to distribute amongst a set of City planning issues. 


There were 95 participants who prioritized their 6 chips according to the graph to the right. Sports and recreation was of the most importance with downtown vitality and bikes and trails tied for 2nd and 3rd. Housing costs and traffic were also important to the Farmer's Market crowd that day.

Maritime Gig Fest June 3, 2023

Word clouds are a helpful representation of a large amount of complex information. Word clouds are used here to distill the feedback from the opening day of the Farmer's Market.


The City received feedback at the 2023 Maritime Gig Festival downtown. Participants added sticky notes to posters describing existing Comprehensive Plan policies.


The City received a lot of feedback regarding land use downtown, support for small business, and a desire for higher-density housing.

The City received feedback at the opening day of the 2023 Farmer's Market. Participants added sticky notes to posters describing existing Comprehensive Plan policies.


The feedback included a desire for more cycling infrastructure and public transportation, as well as better public access to the waterfront, and a performing arts center.

Visioning Fair May 20, 2023

Word clouds are a helpful representation of a large amount of complex information. Word clouds are used here to distill the feedback from the City's Visioning Fair.


The City held a Visioning Fair to kick off the 2044 Comprehensive Plan update effort in May 2023. At the fair, the City received feedback on existing Comprehensive Plan policies. Participants added comments to posters with sticky notes, and filled out worksheets about different policy types.

Downtown

Gig Harbor residents care deeply about the future of the downtown and harbor area. The City heard a lot of comments about the need for more diverse restaurant and retail options, more parking, and a desire to preserve the maritime history and small-town feel.

Housing

Housing, both the cost and inventory, are extremely important on a national and local scale. The City heard a lot of concerns about housing across a spectrum of interests. The City is tasked with meeting state and regional requirements, and helping residents understand those obligations.

Arts & Culture

A strong contingent of people advocating for a performing arts center showed up to the Visioning Fair. Many participants want arts and culture to be a more distinct focus for the City.

Economic Development 

Small businesses are top of mind for many people in Gig Harbor. The City heard from a number of residents that want to see small businesses thrive throughout town. The City has to enforce requirements for health, safety, and design, and help residents understand why those are important in the planning and development process.

Transportation

Concerns about transportation concern all modes: bicycles, pedestrians, and cars. The City received a lot of feedback about the roundabouts, traffic congestion, parking, and pedestrian and cycling infrastructure and safety.

Zoning & Land Use

The City relies on zoning and land use regulations to create a safe, liveable and attractive environment for its residents.


The City received feedback across a wide spectrum of interest in land development, development density, parks, and waterfront development.

Community Vision

The Comprehensive Plan update process includes a vision statement. The City received a lot of feedback to make the vision statement more inclusive and representative of the City in 2023.

Outreach

The City is constantly trying to improve the quality and consistency of its outreach and communications. 


The City received a lot of great feedback that will help us reach critical community groups such as youth, seniors, and people with different access and inclusion needs.
