Volunteer Programs
Our Volunteer Programs are currently fully staffed. We will hold submitted applications and contact you when a position becomes available.
Citizens Offering Police Support
Initiated several years ago, the Citizens Offering Police Support (COPS) program is nationally recognized. The program organizes volunteers who are able to support and assist our police department in numerous activities ot requiring a commissioned police officer. The friendships and bonds that are created by participants in the program are invaluable. There are many ways a volunteer can assist the Gig Harbor Police Department. Whenever possible, the Gig Harbor Police Department will match a volunteer’s specific skills and interests to particular tasks. Their role is to observe and report information, though the volunteer is prohibited from intervening in any manner. For more information contact COPS Coordinator Chief Busey at (253) 851-2236.
Explorers Program
Due to Covid-19 and staffing considerations, the GHPD Explorers Program is temporarily suspended.
An innovative part of the Gig Harbor Police Department is the Explorers Program designed to provide challenging training and firsthand experience to young people interested in a future career in law enforcement. Explorers are expected to be mature individuals with a genuine desire to be a positive role model for the community. The post requires a significant time commitment, as well as minimal volunteer hours each month. It is an exciting way to engage in the community while having a great time learning and meeting new people -- it is a rewarding and positive experience. For more information call (253) 851-2236.
